What Is Preventative Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry involves establishing habits that will keep your teeth healthy, helping you avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. During your regular visit at North Shores Dental and Cliffside Dental, your dental hygienist will point out any issues that you may be having with your oral hygiene. Your hygienist will perform a dental prophylaxis, dental exam, an oral cancer exam, and take any necessary X-rays.

Prophylaxis refers to the preventive treatment that involves the thorough professional cleaning of the teeth and gums to remove plaque, tartar, and stains, helping to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

We will also evaluate the appearance of your teeth and recommend any aesthetic procedures that will enhance your smile, such as cosmetic or orthodontic procedures. Since we began serving patients in Toronto & Scarborough, our goal has been a whole-body health approach.

What Do We Do Differently With Our Preventative Care?

We manage biofilm differently. Biofilm is a thin, slimy film of bacteria that adheres to a surface. It is composed of microorganisms that are embedded within a self-produced matrix. Biofilms can form on living tissues like teeth, where they can lead to dental plaque, cavities, and gum disease.

Biofilms are significant because they provide a protective environment for the bacteria, making them more resistant to antibiotics and the immune system. This makes biofilms a common concern in both medical and dental fields.

We manage biofilm by using Air Polish and Ultrasonic Scaling Technology. Air Polishing uses a combination of air, water, and a fine powder to gently remove biofilm, stains, and plaque from the teeth and gums. Ultrasonic Scaling uses high-frequency vibrations to break down and remove tartar and plaque from the teeth and below the gumline. We are able to customize the settings to offer multiple levels of water volume and power adjustment, as well as different temperature settings, to ensure a comfortable and effective treatment for each patient.

Why It’s Superior

Effective Biofilm Removal: The combination of air polishing and ultrasonic scaling ensures thorough removal of biofilm, which is essential for preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

Minimally Invasive: The technology is gentle and minimally invasive, making it more comfortable for patients compared to traditional scaling methods.

Improved Oral Health: By effectively removing biofilm and stains, the machine helps improve overall oral health and can prevent the progression of gum disease and tooth decay.

Patient Comfort: The customizable settings and gentle treatment approach ensure a comfortable experience for patients, reducing anxiety and discomfort during the procedure.

Time-Efficient: The procedure is quick and efficient, often taking less time than traditional methods while providing superior results.

Overall, biofilm management therapy using the Air Polishing and Ultrasonic Scaling machine offers a superior, comfortable, and effective way to maintain optimal oral health. If you have any more questions or need further information, feel free to ask!

What You Can Do to Prevent Tooth Decay

Establishing at-home oral hygiene habits is essential to keeping your teeth healthy. Brushing twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing after eating will help to remove plaque and decay. Plaque is difficult to remove and the best at-home habits may not be enough to keep it a bay. This is why it is so important to schedule regular dental visits and allow our trained staff of hygienists to catch any problems that may be lurking before they become serious.
