The Scarborough Bluffs were formed over 12,000 years ago, carved by retreating glaciers that left behind layers of sand, silt, and clay stretching along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The name itself dates back to 1793, when Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of Upper Canada’s first Lieutenant Governor, compared the towering cliffs to the coastal town of Scarborough, England. That comparison eventually gave the entire district its name. As the surrounding land developed through the 19th and early 20th centuries, small farming and fishing communities took root near the base of the bluffs. Neighborhoods like Birch Cliff and Cliffside grew as streetcar lines extended east along Kingston Road, bringing new residents who wanted lakeside living within reach of the city. Guildwood’s story is closely tied to the Guild Inn, once an artists’ colony and later a hotel that helped establish the area’s reputation as a peaceful, creative retreat.
