Scarborough History

Scarborough’s history is a rich tapestry that reflects the evolution of the area from its early indigenous inhabitants to its incorporation into the modern city of Toronto. Initially home to the Seneca and later the Mississaugas, European settlers began arriving in the late 18th century, with the area officially opening to British settlement in 1796.

The establishment of the Thomson Settlement by David and Andrew Thomson marked the beginning of Scarborough’s development into a thriving community. By 1850, Scarborough was incorporated as a township, featuring a local government led by a reeve and councillors, with the village of Birch Cliff becoming the governmental center in 1922.

Scarborough’s governance evolved through significant milestones, including its incorporation into Metropolitan Toronto in 1953, which brought regional governance while retaining local councils. The transformation continued with its designation as a borough in 1967, introducing a mayor-led council, and eventually becoming a city in 1983 with an expanded council. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Scarborough transitioned from rural to suburban, with significant housing developments and growth in residential density, especially around the Scarborough City Centre.

The administrative landscape shifted again in 1988, streamlining the local government structure and aligning more closely with metropolitan governance. However, the most profound change came in 1998, when Scarborough, along with other municipalities, amalgamated into the current city of Toronto, marking the end of its governance as a separate entity but not its unique community spirit and historical significance.
