Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before or our sister location in Toronto, we can get you there, using the Birchcliff Community Centre as the starting point.
- Exit the community centre and get onto Birchmont Rd heading south, then turn left onto Kingston Rd. Continue 2.3 km. Then, right after the Starbucks, turn right into our parking lot. We’re at 2451 Kingston Rd.
- If you’re interested in checking out North Shores Dental, it’ll be a slightly longer drive. Get onto Kingston Rd. heading southwest. After 2.6 km, look for us on your right, just before you draw level with the YMCA on your left.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Birchcliff, initially developed as a streetcar suburb in the 1920s, represents the earliest suburban development in Scarborough. Unlike later automotive-based suburbs that emerged post-World War II, Birchcliff grew around the Toronto and Scarboro’ Electric Railway, Light, and Power Company’s streetcar line on Kingston Road, which transitioned to a TTC service in 1921. This area quickly became the most populated part of Scarborough, and by 1922, it hosted Scarborough’s municipal council meetings along Kingston Road, which also developed into a bustling shopping district.
The historical significance of Birchcliff is further marked by the construction of the R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, which began in 1932 along the waterfront. Completed in the same year and designed in an Art Deco style, this functional plant still operates under the City of Toronto.
By 1954, streetcar service east of Victoria Park ceased, transitioning to a suburban bus route. Post-war development shifted Kingston Road into a major thoroughfare for newer eastern suburbs, leading to the decline of local shops. Despite changes, the area by the lake and surrounding ravines maintained its status as an affluent residential district.
A noteworthy part of the neighbourhood’s history involves the former Birchcliff Quarry. Operated by the Toronto Brick Company, this quarry south of the railroad tracks and north of Gerrard was later converted into a landfill from 1954 to 1960. After closing, the land was earmarked for high-density residential development. Plans for a major Scarborough Expressway nearby were halted due to civic activism and changing urban planning philosophies. As of 2012, despite community reservations, the Ontario Municipal Board approved a “tower in the park” style development for the site, reflecting its historical zoning.
